Great reviews in Vinous

93 Points
2019 Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir
Glistening ruby-red. Intensely perfumed cherry and dark berry scents are complemented by suggestions of cocoa powder, baking spices and pungent flowers. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering appealingly sweet red and blue fruit flavors that turn livelier as the wine opens up. The berry and floral notes drive a very long, gently chewy finish framed by fine-grained, even tannins. - Josh Raynolds, February 2022

93 Points
2019 Temperance Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir
Brilliant ruby. Mulberry, cherry cola, licorice and succulent flowers on the deeply perfumed nose. Juicy red and blue fruit preserve, baking spice and floral pastille flavors deepen slowly as the wine opens up. Blends richness and energy with a sure hand and finishes very long, spicy and gently tannic, leaving kirsch and botanical herb notes behind. - Josh Raynolds, February 2022

92 Points
2019 Fairsing Vineyard Pinot Noir
Dark magenta. Kirsch, blackberry, violet and potpourri aromas show sharp clarity and building spiciness. Chewy and broad on the palate, offering bitter cherry, dark berry, spicecake and botanical herb flavors that turn sweeter and livelier through the back half. Finishes smoky and long, with repeating dark berry character and dusty tannins that build steadily and add firm closing grip. - Josh Raynolds, February 2022

92 Points
2019 Meyer Vineyard Pinot Noir
Vivid ruby. Fresh red and blue fruit, floral and baking spice scents show fine clarity and spicy lift. Palate-caressing raspberry, boysenberry and floral pastille flavors deepen steadily through the back half. Betrays no rough edges and finishes smooth and long, with sneaky tannins and lingering blue fruit and spice notes. - Josh Raynolds, February 2022

90 Points
2019 Corinne Vineyard Pinot Noir
Bright ruby-red. Aromas of blackberry, cherry pit and pungent flowers pick up licorice and spice nuances with aeration. Juicy and focused in the mouth, offering bitter cherry and dark berry flavors and a sweetening touch of mocha. The spicy note repeats on the gently tannic and nicely persistent finish, which leaves a succulent herb note behind. - Josh Raynolds, February 2022

92 Points in Wine Enthusiast

Fairsing Pinot Noir BottleOur 2019 Fairsing Vineyard Pinot Noir was awarded a 92 point score by Wine Enthusiast Magazine!

"Along with value-priced varietal wines, Elk Cove's sister winery offers limited-production single vineyard Pinots from non-estate sources. This fragrant wine opens with violets and raspberries and then moves into a spicy palate loaded with plums and blueberries. The acidity sparkles and pushes bright fruit flavors into a lingering finish. Given its screw cap seal, this wine should be decanted and will retain freshness for many years to come." - Paul Gregutt, Contributing Editor

This review published in the December, 2021 issue of the magazine.

Wine Enthusiast's 100-point wine-scoring scale:
98–100 – Classic. 94–97 – Superb. 90–93 – Excellent. 87–89 – Very good.

Corinne Wins Gold!

Our 2019 Corinne Pinot Noir won gold at the 2021 Sunset International Wine Competition with a 90 point score!

We're very pleased because this is our first vintage making a single vineyard Pinot Noir from Corinne Vineyard. Planted in 1989 by the original owners of Rex Hill, it is a truly unique 27-acre vineyard at the intersection of marine and volcanic soils. Tucked into the south side of the Chehalem Mountains, it is a warmer site for Pinot Noir, producing intense fruit, heady aromatics, and lots of structure. We source from two blocks on the estate, Block 2 and Block 8, on the volcanic east-side of the property with the site's signature "Anklebreaker" basalt rocks. Learn more about this vineyard here.

Our 2019 Chardonnay is awarded 91 points by Tasting Panel Magazine

Our 2019 Chardonnay was awarded 91 points by Tasting Panel Magazine and included in their DOWN THE AISLE SECTION:

"This Chardonnay shows keen acidity and an angular body, our definition of modern. Sourced from four Yamhill-Carlton AVA vineyards, this sister label to Elk Cove is a ray of sunshine. It shows just-juiced lemon, under-ripe pineapple and wet stone, which adds textural dimension and keep its dynamic."

Corrine Vineyard

Planted in 1989 by the original owners of Rex Hill, it is a truly unique 27-acre vineyard at the intersection of marine and volcanic soils. Tucked into the south side of the Chehalem Mountains, it is a warmer site for Pinot Noir, producing intense fruit, heady aromatics, and lots of structure. We source from two blocks on the estate, Block 2 and Block 8, on the volcanic east-side of the property with the site's signature "Anklebreaker" basalt rocks.

Originally part of the Kings Ridge/Jacobs-Hart property planted by Rex Hill in the late-80s, it's now owned by Cooper Mountain who recently purchased the 30-acre property from John Olenik. Under new ownership, they are transitioning to biodynamic farming which emphasizes the health of the vines, soil, and vineyard ecosystem.

Our winemakers Adam Campbell and Heather Perkin have been working with fruit from this incredible Pinot Noir site for well over a decade. They share an appreciation for the terroir which showcases diverse aspects and soils within a small area. Thin marine sediments like those found in the nearby Ribbon Ridge AVA dominate the westside of the site, while rocky volcanic soils are located on the warmer eastside.

Both of our Corrine blocks were planted in 2009 and are located on the rocky volcanic east side of the property – Block 2 (Pommard) & Block 8 (777). This vineyard is so distinctively rocky that it has been aptly nicknamed “Anklebreaker” by another winemaker. Under the vines are layers of irregular basalt rocks, remnants of an ancient landslide, that absorb heat during the day, extending the ripening into the evenings, and providing lovely structure and deep flavors to the wines.

A superstar in the world of Oregon Pinot Noir, Elk Cove Vineyards has been family-owned and -operated since 1974, when it was founded by Pat and Joe Campbell, multigenera-tional farmers who were among the first to recognize the state’s poten-tial as a growing region. Their 1978 Riesling, which earned gold medals at several tastings and competitions upon its release—including the Oregon State Fair and the Tri-Cities Wine Festival—was an early indicator of not only Elk Cove’s own rising status but also the promising future of Oregon’s wine industry. Forty-plus years later, Pat and Joe’s son, winemaker Adam Campbell, continues his parents’ tradition as the first producers of estate-grown, handcrafted cool-climate wines in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA; today, Elk Cove oversees six vineyards totaling 380 planted acres. In 2016, the Campbells expanded even further, found- ing a sister winery, Pike Road, to produce affordable yet high-quality Willamette Valley wines. In addition to sourcing from Elk Cove’s estate vineyards, Pike Road partners with other small family-owned farms across four of the region’s sub-AVAs, offer-ing consumers a glimpse of the diversity of soils, climates, and elevations that define its terroir. Meyer Vineyard in Dundee Hills, for example, is organically farmed at elevations of up to 800 feet, while Yamhill-Carlton’s Shea Vineyard uses sustainable practices to grow the highly allocated fruit it harvests from its 30-year-old vines. The resulting wines tell the story of both their place of origin and the people who live and work there. In short, the Campbells have long been committed to producing best-in-class cool-climate wines, and with the release of the stunners below, 2020 was another banner year for their legacy. —Rachel Burkons
